The Four Freedoms
We believe knowledge is only truly free when it grants its users four essential freedoms. Knowledge — whether scientific, academic, or practical — is free if all of the following hold true:
Use
anyone may use the knowledge for any purpose, without restriction or need for permission.
Study
anyone may examine how it works, understand its reasoning, and learn from it openly.
Distribute
anyone may share copies of it with others, so that knowledge can spread freely.
Improve
anyone may build on it, refine it, and share those improvements so the whole community benefits.
